California Cold
Ironing
California
And The
Implementation
of Cold Ironing
California Cold Ironing
is receiving a
great deal of
interested in
ports around the
world.
Californians
breathe the
cleanest air
since
measurements
have been
recorded. For
example the
number of first
stage alerts in
the Los Angeles
area has been
cut from 200 per
year to less
than 10 per year
today. One
reason for this
is the
aggressive
approach they
have taken to
implementing
Cold Ironing
into their
ports.
Ships in the
ports of Los
Angeles and Long
Beach generate
more than 4,000
tons of
smog-forming
nitrogen oxide
pollution. The
new
California Cold
Ironing
system just at
the China
Shipping Line
terminal
eliminates more
than 3 tons of
nitrogen oxides
and 350
pounds of diesel
particulate
matter for each
ship that plugs
in.
California Cold
Ironing
system is
attracting
attention around
the world, and
more ports are
seeing the
effects of what
cold ironing can
do for the
environment.
Cold Ironing is
a method that
ships turn off
their engines
when docking and
plugged into the
port power.

The Port of Long
Beach and
British
Petroleum have
initiated a
project to
install
shore-side
electrical power
at Berth T-121,
and wiring and
plugs on two BP
tanker.
These tankers
will be using
California Cold
Ironing
whenever they
call on Long
Beach. This is
the first step
of a master plan
to upgrade and
implement cold
ironing. The
Port of Long
Beach will have
10 berths when
the plan is
completed in
2011, it will
allow for 381
ships to plugged
into shore-power
per year.
According the
the California
Air Resources
Board, if ships
use
cold ironing
only
making three or
more annual
visits to the
port, emissions
would be reduced
by 70 percent.
This means about
17 tons of
nitrogen oxide
and .4 tons of
particulate
matter per day
would be
eliminated .

The Use Of
